Lagos

Lagos is a place of cobbled streets, with a pretty square and ancient town walls and is steeped in history. Lagos is an historical town which was founded in 1364 with walls protecting the old town dating from the 16th century. It was the capital of the Algarve between 1404 and 1755 and now is the regions third largest city. A fortress dating back to the 17th century houses an exhibition of the Portuguese discoveries – the slave market, the oldest in Portugal is now used as an art gallery.

Harbour

Today, Lagos is a prosperous, lively town offering something to all age groups. The old town is a warren of cobbled streets hosting a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars specialising in international cuisine and traditional fish dishes. A working harbour sees local fishermen emptying their catch daily, whilst the picturesque marina is a popular mooring for yachts and pleasure craft.

Lagos boasts a number of beautiful beaches, with miles of wonderful white sand that are rarely crowded. The sea is very safe and shallow for quite a distance so really good for children with the nearest and best beach being a maximum of ten minutes walk away from our apartment. There are also masses of free parking if you do decide to drive.

Activities

You can do so much in Lagos. You can go deep sea fishing, take boat trips to inaccessible beaches or just sail along this most beautiful coast, enjoying the spectacular grottoes and scenery. Boats are also available for hire for your own use. Visit the local zoo marina, one of the few places in Europe where you can SWIM WITH DOLPHINS! Take a motor cycle and side car trip to one of four lovely locations - it's a really fun trip. Visit the spectacular Water Park which can be reached by car or the regular bus service. There are many water sports available to you, including wind surfing. If you also want to see some local culture Lagos still has most of it's old wall intact, dating back to Roman times. There are some wonderful churches, museums and galleries. At night the town comes alive with jazz clubs, bars and nightclubs open until late. A monthly activities and events sheet is published and is widely available.

The beauty of Lagos is that it is an all year round holiday area. Golf resorts of Boa Vista, Palmares and Parque da Floresta are only ten minutes away and offer great locations and we offer special rates between November and March. Palmares Golf course, with eighteen holes has a reputation as one of the most scenic of all the Algarve courses. It has five link holes on the front nine, located along the sand dunes of Mei Praia beach. The others, Boavista Golf Club, Parque De Floresta and Penina Golf Club, are located in the gently rolling hills 2km east of Lagos.

Boavista golf course with eighteen holes is a championship course and has breathtaking views and wonderful scenery. The atlantic can be seen from most of the holes and the whole area is beautifully planted with olive, almond and palm trees. There are five holes where water comes into play. Parque De Floresta also boasting eighteen holes in another varied course, quite unlike others locally. It is more rugged and sloped and can be quite a challenge if the weather is windy! Finally, Penina Golf Club has been host to the Portuguese Open 8 times (including 1999 and 2000) as well as the European Seniors Match Play Championship.
